After graduating from Marquette University with a BA in political science, attorney James R. Carey attended Loyola University Chicago School of Law, where he earned a JD and worked as an editor for the Loyola Law Journal and The Business Lawyer. He attained admission to the bar in Illinois in 1989 and has served as a partner in the Chicago-based firm Levin Schreder Carey LTD since 2001. Drawing on broad experience in trial litigation, mediation, and appeals, attorney James R. Carey focuses his practice on disputes involving estate, trust, guardianship, and family business issues. He also provides clients with fiduciary and estate planning risk management services.

Formerly chair of the Chicago Bar Association’s Probate Practice Committee, James R. Carey currently chairs the Fiduciary Litigation, Ethics, and Malpractice Group for the American Bar Association’s Section of Real Property, Trust, and Estate Law. He belongs to the Chicago Council of Estate Planners and has spoken on fiduciary subjects for organizations ranging from the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers to the American Law Institute. Along with publishing articles in the peer reviewed journal Trust & Estates, he has authored or coauthored several chapters for the IICLE Contested Estates Manual.

As a participant in the annual On Cloud Nine gala, Carey helps raise funds for the local Chicago mentoring and needs-based scholarship organization Horizons for Youth. He also maintains active involvement in St. Giles Parish and is a previous co-chair of the Parish Council.
